Doubloon

The obverse features
the Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland
and reads
"BE HERE AND BE YOURSELF...BRING MASK - GO PLACES...MARDI GRAS 1970."
The reverse features
Two Mardi Gras Masks
and reads
"A DAY TO REMEMBER...MARDI GRAS IN 'OLD' NEW ORLEANS...A PLACE TO BE...1967 - FEB 7...1968 - FEB. 27...1969 - FEB. 18...1970 - FEB. 10...1971 - FEB. 23."
The
doubloon
measures 39 mm or 1 1/2" in diameter, is made of Solid Bronze and is in
Excellent Condition.

Note:  This doubloon was made by H. Alvin Sharpe, the creator of the Mardi Gras Doubloon, and bears his familiar 'HAS' initials.  Mr. Sharpe fell in love with New Orleans and made it his home.  He also loved Mardi Gras and did his best to promote it to everyone he met.  He made and sold these doubloons both as souvenirs of Mardi Gras and as Reminders of the Future Dates of Mardi Gras so visitors would know when Mardi Gras was so they would plan to return.  He chose the Rabbit from Wonderland for the obverse because the Mardi Gras experience is similar to a Surreal Wonderland Experience, with Masked and Costumed Revelers and Parades, in addition to the other Fun and Merriment of the Mardi Gras Experience.  Just read his words on the obverse again as he invites everyone to come and join in on the fun.  And on the reverse, he reminds that Mardi Gras is "A Place To Be."  Mr. Sharpe made these doubloons for several years in a
variety
of metals and different color finishes from Plain Aluminum to Fine Silver.  Great piece of of HAS and Mardi Gras Memorabilia!
