    Description

1981 Bavaria 7th Int. "Leutershausen  Weiskopf Volksmarch"
    Plate Diameter  7 1/2  inches.
Gustav Weiskopf/Whitehead was an early aviation pioneer who emigrated from Germany to USA prior to 1900.  He designed flying machines and engines.  According to a Connecticut newspaper, an article was written by an eye witness stated that Whitehead accomplished a sustained flight in Connecticut on August 14, 1901.
The one hundred year anniversary edition of the "aviation bible", Jane's World Aircraft, recognized Whitehead as the first in the world to fly a power-manned aircraft, displacing Wright Brothers.
Smithsonian continues to recognize the Wright Brothers as first in flight.  The sale of the Wright Flyer was purchased by the Smithsonian with certain conditions.  The most important is that, if they recognize any other airplane that is a controlled and powered-man flight that occurred before December 17, 1903, the ownership of the airplane reverts to the Wright Brothers Estate.
The book, History by Contract, written by William O'Dwyer and Stella Randolph, presents information on Whitehead's flight.  This plate is an interesting item for aviation enthusiasts.
