    Description

Antique Japanese Banko ware Tapestry Mosaic Tea Set PERFECT 19th C 5pcs. Teapot is 2.5 inches to edge of rim, creamer and sugar are approximately 2.25 inches to edge of rim. The lids for the teapot and sugar bowl add approximately another 1/2 inch to each. Each of the 5 pieces is in excellent condition....no chips, no nicks, no cracks.
The process to creat these beautifully, and rare pieces of pottery, is called tapestry, and the process to creat these wafer thin wares was very complex and labor intensive. The result was unique, one of a kind in every piece. The inside of each piece, and the undersides of the lids are glazed. The rims still show the applied gold, though it has been rubbed off on places, as well as the tips of the knobs of both lids. Ropes of twisted brown and beige clay encircle the bases of the ruffled rims, with tiny bows marking each handle. The woven handle on the teapot is original to the pot, and during packing for storge was a bit deformed, but still intact.
