RARE NORTHWOOD "SPANISH LACE"CRANBERRY OPALESCENT SYRUP PITCHER
Available for purchase is a Victorian-era syrup pitcher made by the Northwood Glass Company in Indiana, Pennsylvania. The pattern is called "Spanish Lace" by collectors, originally called "Opaline Brocade" by Northwood. It was introduced by Northwood in 1899. The color is cranberry opalescent.
This pattern was made in many different shapes, several of which are pictured on page 41 in the book "
Victorian Colored Pattern Glass Book III Syrups, Sugar Shakers and Cruets From A to Z
" by William Heacock.
The body of the syrup pitcher is ovoid-shaped with a cylindrical collar. It stands about 5 5/8" tall to the top of the lid. The body is approximately 4 1/8" wide at the middle. The applied handle is clear with a ribbed design. The flip-top lid is period correct. This exact shaped syrup pitcher is pictured in a 1900 advertisement that is shown on page 136 in the book "
Harry Northwood The Early Years 1881-1900
" by Heacock, Measell, and Wiggins. It was called a "molasses can" in the advertisement.
I purchased this syrup pitcher at a recent estate sale. It's guaranteed to be an antique syrup pitcher made by Northwood and NOT a modern reproduction. Please check my positive feedback and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.
Condition of this Victorian-era syrup pitcher is FAIR. Much to my dismay, I noticed a significant crack under the handle (see photo) after I purchased the piece. It still displays well, but the crack is noticeable when the piece is examined closely. The metal lid has some some discoloration spots and a small dent, but it operates properly. Overall, this antique syrup pitcher is not the perfect example most collectors are looking for, but it's a great display piece of a hard-to-find pattern. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. I'm confident you'll be pleased with this purchase.
If you collect antique opalescent glass, particularly syrup pitchers, don't miss your opportunity to purchase this offering. This pattern is quite scarce in the syrup pitcher form, especially in cranberry. My Buy It Now price of only 9 is a bargain (much less than I paid for it) and reflective of its imperfect condition. The only other example I can find pictured online sold for 8 in 2015. So buy this syrup pitcher now before someone else beats you to the deal!
